El Segundo’s Cross Country team tackled their first league meet on Wednesday, September 25th. The boys team placed 4th overall as Gavin Glynn finished first for El Segundo with a time of 18:00. The girls placed 3rd overall with South Torrance and Torrance coming in ahead of them. Hannah Curran lead the team through the finish with a time of 22:36. PV provides a treacherous course composed of three main hills including Mt. Agony.
The boys varsity team featured Gavin Glynn, Nolan Sharp, Scott Willis, Alex Koran, Matthew Quashnick, Quinn O’Connor, and Nick Ostler. Though it is his first year, sophomore Gavin is setting standards high this season. Juniors Nolan, Scott, and Nick have been working hard to prepare for the team’s next league meet by staying hydrated and eating healthy. Seniors Alex and Matthew are also preparing for league as they PR on several invitational courses. Team Captain Quinn O’Connor was not up to his normal standards at PV due to sickness and a small injury. However, he is working hard to recover quickly and efficiently so that he is in mint condition for league.
The girls varsity team features Hannah Curran, Sharon Jacob, Katianna Lee, Carly Brown, Sarah Robinson, Jessica Lee, and Mariela Gutierrez. Sophomore Hannah is a strong leader on the team and seems to be following closely in Anna Farello’s footsteps. Juniors Carly and Jessica work extremely well together and dominate races when running with one another. Junior Sharon has improved greatly from last year and has shown immense potential ever since the team returned from Mammoth this past summer. Team Captain Katianna is maintaining an excellent title as all the girls are fond of her leadership abilities. Freshman Mariela is showing true potential for next year. All the girls have been working hard daily in order to recover quickly to prepare for league.
The varsity team will be driving up to Fresno on October 11th to race the state course the following morning. This is a huge opportunity for the team and provides great experience for the runners. The team’s second league meet is scheduled for October 17th at Columbia Park. This course is extremely flat and the coaches are expecting several huge PR’s. Overall the team has had a great season thus far. Junior varsity girls placed 1st at the Bell Jeff Invitational on September 28th where varsity boys also won 3rd place. Expect great things from the El Segundo Cross-Country team this season.
